Robert Mapplethorpe 50 Americans
50 works by Robert Mapplethorpe will be shown at Sean Kelly Gallery May 6th through June 18th, 2011. Each piece has been selected by one American from each state in the union. Participants may or may not be familiar with Mapplethorpe’s work, according to the gallery but each work selected will be shown with text on why the participant chose it. The gallery hopes to provide a new perspective on the work of Robert Mapplethorpe, from the gallery website:
50 Americans will present a new perspective on Mapplethorpe, whose artistic practice was shaped by the social, cultural, and political agendas of his time. It will serve as a visual sociological survey, demonstrating how Mapplethorpe’s oeuvre is regarded today, shedding light on current cultural tastes and points of view and revealing the power of Mapplethorpe’s enduring legacy.
Robert Mapplethorpe died in 1989 of AIDS related complications at the age of 42. If you find yourself in NYC while the show is up or if you live here, then check it out! Being familiar with his work, I can honestly say that it will blow your mind!
