Last night I celebrated my birthday by going to see Lykke Li.The doors opened at 8 so I made sure to get there early so I could see (I am only 5’5, so general admisson shows prove to be tricky for me) lo and behold they announced that Ms. Li would not be going on until 10:15! I thought to myself that I should stay put and get close to the stage and I can pass the time drinking. A few cocktails later and I start to get impatient, I no longer wanted to listen to the teenage girls next to me discuss hangovers, and after a long day at work I really just wanted to start this party! My mood changed when the opening act took the stage. I’ve never seen anything like this before. A little art school chick with three keyboards and a lot of hair under her arms started to sonically assault me with soaring synth riffs and a voice so other-worldly, it gives me chills just thinking about it. This is how I was introduced to Grimes aka Claire Boucher. Hailing from Canada, this little space pixie could not have been a better opening act. Her beats make you want to fuck and cry all at the same time. Not to say that Lykke wasn’t AMAZING, she was, but I’ve already told you that. Grimes song “Vanessa” has been stuck in my head all day and I don’t want it to leave.
